What is GRAVITATIONAL POTENTIAL ENERGY?

When you encounter the generalized term potential energy it can refer to various types of energy such as

  • gravitational potential energy,
  • elastic potential energy,
  • electric potential energy,
  • chemical potential energy,
  • radioactive potential energy,
  • and many others.

Potential energy is the type of energy that is stored or transferred when work is done on a system. (The word system in physics often refers to an object or objects under observational study.) That is the way it is deductively derived from the Newtonian idea of motion and force.
